Top Voip Innovations 2007 #8-#13

8. Closing The Gap On Call Quality: Survey after survey shows that the primary factor keeping small businesses from moving to hosted VoIP solutions is bad experiences with Internet call quality. RingCentral Inc. uses VoIP switching, with all of its features and functions, but delivering calls to and from its customers over traditional PSTN (public switched telephone network) lines. This lets a client use PSTN delivery until they feel comfortable relying on Internet VoIP for all their telephony needs — if they ever do — and only then make the switch.

9. Text-Messages Running Hosted IP PBXes: Advocates of VoIP have lauded the user configurability of the services practically since their invention. A new wrinkle has been added to the mix – instead of being charged an arm and a leg for doing this by cell phone when overseas. VoIP Logic's hosted VoIP solution allows those commands to be sent by cheap text messaging from low end handsets, and from anywhere in the world.

Expect this to become a standard feature in the market in the next year; it makes too much sense not to be copied ruthlessly.

10. Your Number Forever: Boston-based RNK Communications Inc. lets users buy their existing phone number and keep it forever with their Phone Number Bank service, regardless of carrier, VoIP provider, or location, letting them forward calls wherever they want without having to buy any of the other voice-mail or calling plans that other services require.

11. Making Phone Calls Via Email: Two companies, Jangl and Jaxtr, have services that let you enter someone's email address into a web form, and get an anonymous VoIP call. This shields your number from the person you're calling, and vice versa; though it involves a few additional steps – you have to send them a message, which will have a calling widget embedded. That person can click on the calling widget, and return the call. Added features include the ability to block each other, forever.

While not entirely useful to the business world, expect this to become the "normal way" for teenagers to talk to someone they have a crush on. Also expect that the security conscious will find ways to use email anonymizers and this service to make "untraceable" phone calls. Our prediction?

Homeland Security will try to get these businesses shut down, and will fail.

12. Call Centers Go Downmarket With Hosted VoIP: The larger the business, the more likely it needs a dedicated call center; VoIP services can give a lot of call center functions by a hosted service to even small and medium sized businesses, with all the features a dedicated call center would have – including in-queue announcements, call barging, call recording and CRM integration. This is a space that will get commoditized slowly; the money will be made in the long term service contracts, and customer lock in will happen with customization of packages to specific needs.

13. Voice Recognition Does Keyword Sifting: Pudding Media's free web calls make it the darling on the consumer set; what makes it downright spooky is its ability to extract keywords to drive relevant advertising onto a customer's web browser. To us, it feels like Big Brother is not only listening in, but wants to sell you things. Much the same way Google Adwords revolutionized browser based advertising, and Gmail is supported by advertising links pulled from keywords in email, we expect this to take off. In fact, the only mystery we have to date is why Google hasn't bought the service outright, though their Android platform for cell phones may mean they're building the better mouse trap on their own.
